  • The impact of philanthropy is never more apparent than when it helps keep families together. Due to limited capacity, the Providence Holy Cross Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Mission Hills California had to send about five babies a month to other hospitals. Donors stepped up to help – and with their support, the NICU was able to expand the number of beds from 12 to 18. Now Holy Cross caregivers can treat more premature newborns in a beautiful, modern facility. And families can stay in their own communities for care. Check out the NICU’s transformative renovation and learn how you can help us give the tiniest patients a healthy start in life. https://lnkd.in/gWSbjcyz

  • For years, Heidi Dewey and her husband Dick Dewey, M.D., opened their home to out-of-town Providence St. Patrick patients and their families who couldn’t afford lodging. When the couple realized that the demand was larger than they could meet, Heidi approached the St. Patrick Hospital Foundation and proposed creating a hospitality house for those in need. “The community answered with a generous heart,” she smiled. The three-story historic home known as St. Patrick House opened in 1999 and can accommodate up to 30 people each night. Guests are met with a welcoming smile, warm cookies and a porch full of rocking chairs. Over the last 25 years, nearly 38,500 adults and children have been welcomed through St. Patrick House’s doors – and today, St. Patrick House is funded 100% through gifts to Providence Montana Health Foundation by donors who believe in Heidi’s dream of a place like home. • Ming “Mitch” Shao loves spending time outdoors – on the trails and on the water. He never expected a crabbing trip on Puget Sound would land him in the hospital.   After jumping into the cold water to retrieve an oar, he found himself in a life-threatening situation. Luckily, a good Samaritan on the shore called for help. Mitch was rushed to Providence Everett Medical Center’s Emergency Department, where a team of dedicated caregivers warmed him up and saved his life.   He was so grateful for the care he received, he made a donation to Providence General Foundation and his impact was doubled when his employer, Microsoft matched his gift.   I was just so grateful for everyone who helped,” said Mitch.   Read more of Mitch's powerful story: https://lnkd.in/gbY_suCv

  • For Alan and Brenda Borstein, their decision to make a gift to Saint John's Health Center Foundation in support of Saint John’s Cancer Institute’s melanoma program was personal. Both were successfully treated for melanoma, and now they’re helping fund the institute’s groundbreaking work in combatting skin cancer.     The newly renamed Borstein Family Melanoma Program is considered one of the best in the world. “You always have a hope of eliminating a disease in one form or another – making the treatment safer and quicker,” said Alan Borstein. “There’s an awful lot of research to be done.”  https://lnkd.in/gPRUJ8Jc #Philanthropy #CancerResearch   #HealthForABetterWorld   #EasingEveryHealthJourney

  • Thanks to generous donors, East Elementary school in Kodiak, Alaska, now has an in-house licensed therapist who can assist children as they navigate their growing-up years. This clinician works alongside the school counselor to provide a three-tiered approach to mental health wellness in their community – at no cost to parents. “We’re trying to remove barriers,” said Providence school-based mental health clinician Amanda Meyer. “Being on site makes us more accessible, so someone doesn’t have to come and pick their child up and take them out of school or do it after work. Maybe they work two jobs and can’t get their child to counseling; we can take away that barrier as well as the barrier of long wait lists because counseling everywhere has long wait lists. Read more about this three-tiered approach offering support and upstream education to support younger children. https://lnkd.in/gDJRd-7F #Philanthropy   #MentalHealth #HealthForABetterWorld   #EasingEveryHealthJourney

  • Nationally, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime – and when caught in its earliest, localized stages, the five-year relative survival rate is 99%. That’s why it’s so important everyone within our service areas, especially those living in rural communities, has access to the most advanced technology for their care, close to home. Thanks to donor generosity, a new Brevera Breast Biopsy System is now available at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Washington. This system allows the imaging team to perform most breast biopsies faster and with greater accuracy and decreases the time needed to keep a patient compressed during the procedure – making exceptional care available, closer to home. • An avid gardener, business consultant and happy homebody, Jackie Nagel and her husband, Leon, enjoy an active and content life. All of that was disrupted in 2021 when she was beset by a strange set of symptoms. Her sudden loss of strength and inability to walk was diagnosed as Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks its nerves. Jackie began treatment at a well-known facility and transferred to Providence Little Company of Mary RehabCentre in San Pedro after sensing her recovery was stalled. “They kept my expectations realistic while taking me beyond what I thought I could do,” she remembers. “They created wins for me every time I went into therapy. They would constantly evaluate areas where I was weak and plug in exercises or activities to build them up. They basically rebuilt me one muscle group at a time.” Feeling immense gratitude for her restored health and seeking a way to express her appreciation, Jackie made a bequest to Providence Little Company of Mary Recovery Center in San Pedro in her trust. “The San Pedro RehabCentre prioritizes investing in training and equipment. I want this gift to support the staff and provide them with what they need. I hope other donors join me in helping to create a facility that is worthy of the extraordinary work they are doing.”  Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gPx45rif #Philanthropy      #HealthForABetterWorld     #AdvancingExceptionalCare  #EasingEveryHealthJourney

Dr. Stanton S. Berman and Josephine Berman did practically everything together. They were married for 45 years and moved to rural Sequim, Washington, in 1978, where the couple worked as a family medicine doctor and nurse, respectively, until 1995. “They were in high demand,” says their son, Steve Berman. “It was their love. They just loved taking care of patients.” That devotion to others extended far beyond their health care careers when Stanton and Josephine left Swedish Foundation a $1.5 million bequest in their will. “Swedish was their go-to hospital because they felt Swedish was on the cutting edge,” explains Lisa Harrow, the couple’s daughter. “I think that was their point in donating, trying to give back what they got out of the hospital.” Today, a waiting room in Swedish Cherry Hill is named after Stanton and Josephine. Lisa and her oldest son, Zach, visited and took photos when the sign went up. “Our kids have always been very proud of their grandparents and always looked up to their grandparents,” Lisa says. “I think that was a big event, just to see what their grandparents accomplished.” There are many ways to make an impact in your community, such as including organizations you most care about in your will. Read more of the Berman’s story and learn more about will and estate giving and how your gift can have an impact for generations to come.  Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gJFz8eeh #Philanthropy      #HealthForABetterWorld     #AdvancingExceptionalCare  #EasingEveryHealthJourney

  • Dolores Foglio retired from Providence after a total of 45 years of service as a nurse practitioner and board member at Providence Willamette Falls Medical Foundation. She continues to give back by volunteering – and has also initiated a bequest from her will to advance exceptional care at both Providence Milwaukie Hospital and Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center. “I grew up in Milwaukie and the hospital there saved my dad’s life. I supported my mom every day at Providence St. Vincent as she was fighting leukemia. I have been a cardiac patient at Providence. My experiences alone would inspire a gift to make sure the excellent work here continues. Add my employment – and it was a no-brainer!” said Dolores. Completing a will allows you to clearly express your wishes for your family’s financial future while also supporting causes meaningful to you. Our team is here to help guide and support you if you need assistance creating a will or planning your legacy. Email us at giftplanning@providence.org or call us at 877-228-2574.
