Melissa comes from a large family of veterans who served across all branches of the military, including both of her grandfathers who served during and after World War II. While she did not serve herself, she says that her family’s experiences have taught her to be resilient. “I’ve learned the importance of honoring your commitments, taking care of your community and acting with integrity,” she says. “I was taught that when you decide to pursue a course of action, go for it with all that you have and you won’t regret it. Because of these lessons, I have challenged myself personally and professionally to branch out of my comfort zone and stay true to myself along the way. Even when failure happens, I have no regrets and continue to the next chapter.” That’s why she says National Veterans and Military Families Month reminds her to honor and respect our country, our freedoms and the sacrifices of veterans while providing a network of support to veterans and their families. As part of the Veterans and Employees Together in Service (VETS) Employee Resource Group, she's paying those principles forward. “I would not be where I am in my career or in my personal life without the support of those around me to teach me and challenge me to pursue my goals and stretch out of my comfort zone,” she says. “At Memorial Hermann, we value courage, act with compassion and serve our community, which are similar to the values of those who serve or have served our country. I am honored to be a part of the VETS ERG to give back to our employees and our community.”
